CMC has brought the most famous of this legendary cars to life with a 1:18 scale rendition of the 250 TR version. The spectacular body form and the extraordinary styling of the so-called "Pontoon Fenders" are what gave the 1958 Testa Rossa its unique looks.
The Testa Rossa, literally "red head" in English, owes its name to the valve covers of its 12-cylinder engine being painted red. The Testa Rossa is one of the most hot-blooded and successful race cars of all time; it led Ferrari to win several Sports Car World Championships and three Le Mans victories (1958/60/61), amont others.
The development of the Testa Rossa started in 1957 in response to a forthcoming change in the rules of the FIA. Sure enough, the FIA reduced the engine displacement to 3 litres in 1958. Ferrari had managed to hark back to their famous Colombo V12 engine of the 250 GT series. Equipped with an enhanced 2.953 ccm displacement, it became a powerful 300 hp engine for the Testa Rossa.
Sergio Scaglietti, the ingenious automobile designer and coachbilder, was responsible for the extraordinary front that gave the Testa Rossa its remarkable appearance. The most spectacular Testa Rossa's front drum brakes a better cooling. Soon everbody in the international racing circles started talking about the "Pontoon Fender" Test Rossa.
So it was natural for CMC to choose and replicate the Pontoon Fender version. Take a ride with us in the memory lane of an extraordinary, exciting, and flamboyant legend in racing car design and history. This model is made in 1:18 scale and hand assembled from 1,638 single parts.
A total of 19 vehicles were delivered to private racing teams, and four more were built just for the Scuderia Ferrari. 2009 saw Maranello hold a famous auction "Leggenda e Passione", where a 250 Testa Rossa "Pontoon Fender" was sold for 9.02 Million Euros (approx. 12.5 Million US Dollars). Is there better proof that the fascination about the Testa Rossa lives on today?
