Description of the original vehicle: The Auto Union-team and the Italian driver "Il Diabolo", Tazio Nuvolari were very successful with the Type D. The "Flying Man from Mantua", who got his nickname due to his spectacular style of driving won the Grand Prix of Italy and England in an Auto Union Type D in 1938. In England (Donington Park, 22 October 1938) Nuvolari absolved the race with the start-No. 4.

In the following year, H.P. Müller won in an Type D the Grand Prix of France and Nuvolari gained the last Grand Prix in Belgrad on 3nd September 1939 before starting the Second World War.
With this victory brought a great race-era to the end for a long time.
